As the Cook Islands marks 60 years of self-governance, debate about sovereignty, our relationships with New Zealand and others further abroad have emerged. Government decision-making, national priorities and potential security risks associated with development partner agreements have been points of contention.

This panel will explore the risks and opportunities of foreign influence on the Cook Islands’ development and diplomacy. Bringing together local and overseas perspectives, the discussion will consider the geopolitical, economic and social impacts of external partnerships for the Cook Islands. Panelists will discuss different interests and implications along with strategies for attending to risks and opportunities to ensure the long-term resilience, accountability, and sustainability of the Cook Islands during these changing times, and beyond.
