About
Jodie is a New Zealand researcher & academic of Cook Islands Māori descent. Her PhD research focused on mathematics education, developing early algebraic reasoning in primary classrooms. This included a focus on teacher professional development, classroom and mathematical practices, and student perspectives.
Jodie’s research interests include culturally sustaining mathematics pedagogy, funds of knowledge in mathematics for Pacific people and social justice and equity in mathematics education. Her work, undertaken with Pacific diaspora communities in Aotearoa New Zealand, Cook Islands and Niue, aims to transform and re-invent pedagogical practices and support teachers so that they can develop ambitious and culturally responsive mathematics teaching. Central to this area is the need to consider the cultural, linguistic and social contexts of Pasifika students and to develop stronger home/community and school partnerships.
